Emily's Flight Lessons: FIRST SOLO!

Posted on May 14, 2012 by 5 | 0 comments
Hello! My name is Emily and I'm married to Patrick,  the owner and creator of  Nflightcam.  I'm going to be writing  about my adventures in learning to fly here at the Nflighcam Blog.  Of course, I'll be using Nflightcams to capture the flights.   Last week we scheduled a flight lesson nice and early to avoid those pesky winds, and my instructor suggested off handedly that I wear I shirt I didn't care too much about. I may be a new student pilot, but I haven't been married to a pilot for 8 years for nothing. I knew exactly what that meant. Time for a solo flight! Gulp. But even though I was really nervous, it was so much fun! And I'm pretty darn proud of myself too. Of course, it was all captured on an Nflightcam+.   Emily's First Solo Flight from Patrick Carter on Vimeo.

Emily's Flight Lessons: Better Landings

Hello! I was starting to think they were all lying, but last week I finally made a few decent landings! (I just wish I had spit my gum out before takeoff!)

Emily's Flight Lessons: Siloam Springs Flight

Last week we flew over to Siloam Springs (a neighboring city) to practice taking off and landing more.  As I'm sure you can imagine, those two things are the most nerve-wracking skills to learn.  They certainly are for me, anyway. After the landing, you can see me pull on my jacket and mutter something along the lines of, "Is it really warm in here?" I just get so nervous! I've been reassured by my instructor, my husband, and pretty much every other pilot I know, that after a little more practice it will be no big deal. We'll see about that. Also, Siloam Springs doesn't have a control tower so there were some new things to learn about talking on the radio in that situation. We did a few landings on this flight before we realized I was stomping on the brakes right after we touched down. Turns out, that's not a good idea! Oops. (In my defense, the rudder and brakes are the SAME pedal, you just push in different places.) I could see Patrick's blood pressure rising when I told him that.  Good thing he's not my instructor, eh?

Emily's Flight Lessons: Steep Turns

Hello! Sooo... an alternate title for this video would be: The Time I Almost Puked on My Instructor. I don't get motion sick easily and I have no trouble doing steep turns with Patrick or Adam (my instructor) but something about doing it myself makes me so ill. At a particularly whiney moment (that I edited out) I complained that it felt like we were going too fast. To which Adam replied "It's supposed to be fast. Patrick would be so ashamed." Clearly my goal is not to become an aerobatic pilot. I'll stick with nice, calm flight thankyouverymuch.     During the next lesson we worked on a lot of take-offs and landings.  I could definitely use more work in this area, but I'm getting a little better. I've heard the word "solo" mentioned here and there.  Excuse me while I go breathe into a paper bag, okay?

Emily's Flight Lessons: Climbing and Turning

Hello! I've gotten a little behind on my flight lesson videos since Patrick is out of town. He's been the main video editor around here so I had to teach myself to use Final Cut Pro X! (So basically, cut me a little slack on this video. I'm still getting the hang of it.) This lesson was about a week and a half ago, and I can already see progress since then.  Mostly we covered climbing at different airspeeds and some turning techniques. And from the beginning of the video you can see that talking on the radio is not one of my best skills yet either. I feel like I'm learning Greek.   Emily's Flight Lessons: Climbing and Turning from Patrick Carter on Vimeo.   You know, I almost feel like I'm getting the hang of this. That is, when I'm not trying to run us off the runway during takeoff.  I saved that delightful little clip for the blooper reel. Oh yes, there will be an outtakes version of these videos. I should have one more video ready in a day or so, and then, fingers crossed, be caught up on my editing. Also, I just want to say a big thank you for all your kind and encouraging comments and emails. Really.
